Installing the Tools on the CD-ROM
All of the software on the CD-ROM can be found in the directory D:\softwre (where D is your CD-ROM drive).
WinZip for Windows 3.x and Later Systems
Requirements
The Windows 3.1 Version (wz16v61.exe) requires Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups. The Win32 version (winzip95.exe) requires Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.5 or later. While no other programs are required for basic operations involving ZIP files,
optional features require one or more external programs, including PKZIP and PKUNZIP product from PKWARE, Inc, LHA.EXE from Haruyasu Yoshizaki, or the Shareware ARJ product from Robert Jung. WinZip interfaces to several programs to access ARC files and
optionally runs most virus scanning utilities.
Installation
Copy wz16v61.exe or winzip95.exe from your CD-ROM into a temporary directory.
On Windows 95: Select Run from the Taskbar Start menu, type the full name of the file (for example, c:\temp\winzip95.exe), press the Enter key, and follow the prompts.
On Windows 3.1 or Windows NT: Activate the Program Manager, select Run from the File menu, type the full name of the file (for example, c:\temp\wz16v61.exe), press the Enter key, and follow the prompts.
The Internet Lexicon for Windows 3.x and Windows 95/NT Systems
Requirements
80386-SX or higher, Windows 3.1 enhanced mode, 2MB system memory
Installation
Copy ilexfree.exe from your CD-ROM into a temporary directory.
On Windows 95: Select Run from the Taskbar Start menu, type the full name of the file (for example, c:\temp\ilexfree.exe), press the Enter key, and follow the prompts.
On Windows 3.1 or Windows NT: Activate the Program Manager, select Run from the File menu, type the full name of the file (for example, c:\temp\ilexfree.exe), press the Enter key, and follow the prompts.
Known Problems
The graphics and opening screens will not display properly on systems using CGA, EGA, or large-font VGA, SVGA, and XGA systems. This is due to the way Windows Help handles graphics when large fonts are selected, and you will find that 90 percent of
Windows help files have the same problem. This bug occurs on Windows 3.1/3.11 and Windows 95. We recommend the following as a fix:
IconTitleSize=12
The same applies. It's probably the size of your Start menu text and dialog box text that prompted you to select large fonts. We recommend obtaining a program called TWEAKUI.EXE, one of the free power tools from Microsoft for Win95, from Microsoft's
Web site or one of several locations on the Internet. Using a search engine such as Yahoo or Webcrawler, try a search for WINDOWS 95 POWERTOYS or WINDOWS 95 POWER TOYS.
FTP Client
Requirements
CuteFTP requires MS Windows 3.1 or later, WinSock 1.1 or later network interface library, and ctl3dv2.dll (included). You also need at least 2MB of memory.
Installation
- Unzip cutftp32.zip or cutftp16.zip into some directory (if you are unsure of how to do this, see the Help menu in WinZip) and add the CuteFTP .exe file to your program manager group. Note: In Windows 3.1 or 3.11 environment, use cutftp16 (16-bit). In
Windows 95 or NT environment use cutftp32 (32-bit).
Note
If you're upgrading from previous release, DON'T OVERWRITE TREE.DAT and BOOKMARK.DAT files. All other files can be overwritten safely.
- Copy ctl3dv2.dll into the Windows SYSTEM directory and delete it in CuteFTP directory.
- Start CuteFTP and bring up the Options dialog (choose Options from the File menu). Fill out the Mail Address field.
Known Problems
CuteFTP doesn't work with SunSoft PC-NFS, or some versions of the AOL WinSock. Many problems have been reported when running CuteFTP with SLIP emulators (for example, Twinsock, TIA, Slirp). However, in most cases using PASV Mode fixed them. (In
Options|Firewall set FireWall Type to PASV Mode and put a check in the Enable Firewall box.)
Telnet Client
Requirements
EWAN is a WinSock 1.1-compatible application. To be able to use a WinSock application, you need a TCP/IP stack. If you use Windows for Workgroups you can use the free TCP/IP add-on available from ftp.microsoft.com. If you use Windows 3.1, there are a
number of commercially available TCP/IP stacks. You can also try the shareware Trumpet Winsock. Windows 95 and NT are bundled with a WinSock-compatible TCP/IP stack.
Installation
If you are using Windows 3.x:
- Copy ewan1052.exe from your CD-ROM into a temp directory.
- Go to your File Manager and select the appropriate directory where the ewan1052.exe file is to be found.
- Double-click on the ewan1052.exe file. The self-extraction process starts. This will result in several files saved in the same directory where ewan1052.exe is.
- You will not see these files listed immediately. Click once on the C: drive button to display the newly extracted files.
- Look for a file named install.exe. Double-click on this file. This will create a directory named c:\ewan where all the requisite files will be resident and a program group named EWAN where two icons labeled EWAN and EWAN Helpfile will be displayed.
If you are using Windows 95:
- Copy ewan1052.exe from your CD-ROM into a temp directory.
- Click on Start.
- Click on Run.
- In the Open: box, type c:\temp\ewan105.exe ([drive]:\[directory]\ ewan105.exe). The self-extraction process starts in a DOS window. When finished, close the DOS window.
- Click on Start.
- Click on Run.
- In the Open: box, type c:\temp\install.exe ([drive]:\[directory]\ install.exe). The installation program will create a directory named c:\ewan, where all the requisite files will be resident. and a program group named EWAN, where two icons
labeled EWAN and EWAN Helpfile will be displayed.
Note
Two DLL files, bwcc.dll and ctl3dv2.dll, are going to be transferred to your hard drive's c:\windows\system directory when you double-click on the install.exe file. If you are asked to overwrite existing DLL files of the same name,
you may want to refuse the overwrite request. We found that refusing the overwrite does not affect the EWAN Telnet software, or many other software packages. In fact, we almost always try to avoid overwriting system files when installing software.
Included in the extracted EWAN files are two configuration files (config.cfg and vt100.cfg) to configure the way the EWAN Telnet screen will look. You may use these as is, or you may want to modify them appropriately.
If everything seems to work, you may delete all the files left in the hard drive directory where the temporary files are, (for example, c:\temp). These files are no longer necessary.

Paint Shop Pro (32- or 16-bit)
Requirements
System requirements for Version 3.12:
- Minimum : 386 CPU or faster; Windows 95, NT, or Win32s; 8MB RAM or higher; 16-color resolution or higher
- Recommended: 486 or Pentium CPU; Windows 95 or NT; 16MB RAM; 24-bit color (True Color)
System Requirements for Version 3.11:
- Minimum : 386 CPU or faster; Windows 3.1 or higher; 4MB RAM or higher; 16-color resolution or higher
- Recommended: 486 or Pentium CPU; Windows 3.11, Windows 95, or Windows NT; 16MB RAM; 24-bit color (True Color)
Installation
- Start Windows.
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy psp32bit.zip or psp311.zip to a temporary directory.
- Unzip the file (if you are unsure of how to do this, see the Help menu in WinZip).
- Open the File Run dialog box.
- Enter the Command Line. Type in the command that will run the Paint Shop Pro setup.exe program (for example, c:\temp\setup.exe). Leave the Run Minimized box (if you have one) unselected, and click the OK command button (or press Enter).
- Enter the Drive and Directory. This is the location that you want your Paint Shop Pro files to be placed. It will suggest a drive and directory of C:\PSP. If you want the Paint Shop Pro program files installed into a different directory, just
double-click on the directory name you would like to install to or type in a new one. Paint Shop Pro Setup will unpack the necessary files and place them into your directory. The status of the operation will be displayed as the setup program does this
work.
- You will be asked if you would like to add the Paint Shop Pro icons to the Program Manager.
- Select No if you do not want Paint Shop Pro added to your program manager.
- Select Yes to have the setup program automatically build a Paint Shop Pro icon and add it to your program manager.
- The setup program will notify you when the installation is complete.
Map This
Requirements
Map This is a 32-bit program. This means it runs as a native Windows NT or Windows 95 application—much faster than a 16-bit program. In order to get Map This to run under Windows 3.1 or 3.11, you must have the Win32s extension (available from
Microsoft) installed. The normal function of Map This does not require an Internet connection or even WinSock to be installed.
Installation
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy mpths120.zip to a temporary directory.
- Unzip the file (see WinZip's Help file if you have questions about this).
- Run mapthis.exe.
- If you have any questions, see mapthis.hlp.
Known Problems
- Map This is, as mentioned, a 32-bit program. Its creators feel this is not a true limit because of the proliferation of Windows NT, Win95, and Win32s.
- Map This only uses a mouse as input. It's a semi-CAD (X,Y coordinate) program, after all.
- Map This does not perform stringent checking of the values for the areas. You can have off-screen areas that will never be hit, and illegal HTML commands.
- Each polygon area is allowed up to 64 points. Some Web servers put a lower limit. We know of one that only allows up to 16 points.
- The scrolling of the image when you are zoomed in is slow.
WebForms Forms Generator/Reader
Requirements

Installation
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy the wbfrm21b.zip to a temporary directory.
- Unzip the file (see WinZip's Help file if you have questions about this).
- Open the Run File dialog box.
- Enter the Command Line. Type in the command that will run the WebForms setup.exe (for example, c:\temp\setup.exe) program. Leave the Run Minimized box (if you have one) unselected, and click the OK command button (or press Enter).
- Follow the setup instructions.
WebMania HTML Editor
Requirements
Additional Software: vburn300.dll
Installation
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy wmnia15b.zip to a temporary directory.
- Unzip the file (see WinZip's Help file if you have questions about this).
- Open the Run File dialog box.
- Enter the Command Line. Type in the command that will run the WebMania setup.exe program (for example, c:\temp\setup.exe). Leave the Run Minimized box (if you have one) unselected, and click the OK command button (or press Enter).
- Follow the setup instructions.
HTML Lib: HTML Reference Library v2.2
Requirements
Windows 95/NT systems use htmlib9522.zip.
Installation
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy htmlib9522.zip or htmlib22.zip to a temporary directory.
- Unzip the file (see WinZip's Help file if you have questions about this).
- Open the Run File dialog box.
- Enter the Command Line. Type in the dialog box the command that will run the HTML Lib setup.exe program (for example, c:\temp\setup.exe). Leave the Run Minimized box (if you have one) unselected, and click the OK command button (or press Enter).
- Follow the setup instructions.
HTML Notepad Version 2.0
Requirements
Windows 95/NT systems use htmln295.zip.
Installation
If you are using Windows 3.x:
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy htmln231.zip to a temporary directory.
- Use pkunzip -d to unzip all the files in the directory you would like them installed (the -d is necessary as there are some directories that need to be created) WinZip can also do this with its recurse subdirectories command. (See WinZip's Help file
if you have questions about this.)
- From Windows 3.1 go to Program Manager (or your program shell), and select the window group you would like the HTML Notepad icon within. Then select File|New and select Program Item. Once you have pressed OK, you will see a dialog box. If you press
the Browse button, you can then search for the executable. This will install the program.
- Read the initial window—this only comes up when you run HTML Notepad the first time and includes time limit information.
If you are using Windows 95/NT:
- Place the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM Drive.
- Copy htmln295.zip to a temporary directory.
- Use pkunzip -d to unzip all the files in the directory you would like them installed (the -d is necessary as there are some directories that need to be created) WinZip can also do this with its recurse subdirectories command (see WinZip's Help

- From Windows 95, go to the Start toolbar and right-click on the toolbar itself. Select the Properties section of the window and then the Start Menu Programs tabbed control. After this, click Add and you will be given a Program Wizard, which will
enable to you browse for the executable, place it in the folder of your choice, and select a name.
- Read the initial window—this only comes up when you run HTML Notepad the first time and includes time limit information.
GIF Construction Set
Requirements
GIF Construction Set for Windows requires a minimum of 4MB of memory to run reliably, with 8MB preferable. Larger images may require more memory still.
Installation
The self-executable file for Windows 3.x systems is gifcon.exe.
The self-executable file for Windows 95/NT systems is gifcon32.exe.
Just click on the one you need!
